DevConnect Case Study

Duration: October 2023

Challenge: To repair the growing disconnect between game developers and their player base.

Project Duration: October 2023

The Product: DevConnect is an app for game developers and gamers to access forums and gather news and information directly from the developers.

The Problem: There is a growing disconnect between the players and the developers, and it is far from one sided. Whether it be developers turning their backs on the players and making decisions that ultimately harm the game, or players loudly voicing their dismay without knowing what the developers are working on.

The Goal: This app is attempting to remedy their squabbles by providing a space where the developers can provide information that the players are frustrated in not knowing.

  1. What kind of games do you play?

  2. Have you participated in any communities/forums?

  3. What was the developer presence like on that forum?

  4. Have you tried to contact developers/support? Why or why not?

  5. What was the feedback you received?

  6. Was the response automated or was it a personal message?

User Interviews

Some Questioned that were asked were:

This was definitely the part where I struggled the most due to the lack of substantial/diverse answers. But, fortunately I used that to my advantage and was able to sort them into 4 categories.

Card Sorting

I want participation consistency

I like positive connections

I want a personal connection

I want to be heard

Persona

I took the backgrounds of those I interviewed and combined them to make my persona

Initial Sketches / Wireframes

The initial thoughts during these sketches were to blend forum-like and social media-like platforms to create a website.  But that slightly changed once I got to the initial wireframes

Initial Sketches

Pros

Important sections have high readability/visibility

Initial Wireframes

After these wireframes, I realized the website forums would not work. If I wanted to judge this better and adhere to the goal of this project, I would have to switch the format to an application.

Top navigation could be less cluttered

No style guide yet

Neutral

Cons

An app would adhere to the goals better

Fix Text/Item Hierarchy

Can’t Tell the difference between buttons and text fields

Pros

Important sections have high readability.

Style Guide / Mid Fidelity Wireframes

I tried to choose colors that I thought would resonate with the gaming communities and tried to mimic the vibrance of the RGB’s on a PC but, at the same time, not blind the user.

Should add a UI tutorial.

Must add appropriate icons.

Neutral

Cons

Fix Text/Item Hierarchy.

Can’t Tell the difference between buttons and text fields.

High Fidelity Wireframes / Prototype

Pros

Graphics contrast well with background color.

Readable, Quick, and straightforward navigation..

Scroll ability is inferred but not explicitly shown.

Potential for games/studios to use their fonts/logos.

Neutral

Cons

The studio following page doesn’t have much of a purpose yet.

The profile page is not set up.

There was no developer input.
